Many parents experience some degree of fear, shame, and loss upon learning that their child is same-sex oriented or gender nonconforming. Empirically grounded therapies to help parents foster accepting attitudes towards their LGBTQ+ children are critical. Attachment-based family therapy for sexual and gender minority young adults has proven effective in promoting parental acceptance and helping to create closer, more mutually respectful relationships between LGBTQ+ young adults and their parents. This practical guide provides therapists with an empirically supported framework, an in-depth look at the five tasks of treatment, step-by-step instructions for how to navigate these tasks, and helpful case examples to support the creation of in-session transformative experiences to keep LGBTQ+ young adults and their families connected.
