Approximately 1.3 million adults in the United States identify as transgender. Some estimates put that number even higher- closer to 2 million. Around 300,000 children in the United States ages 13-17 identify as transgender. The trajectory is evident; there will be more transgender folks in the future-not less. If you don't already have a transgender friend, neighbor, or co-worker, you might very well have one in the future.

Having said that, let's face it, most people do not know much about the transgender community, and how are you supposed to learn without asking deeply offensive questions? Heaven forbid it is a co-worker- and why wouldn't it be, given that we spend so much of our waking hours at work? Nonetheless, you are almost sure to end up in HR if you ask those burning (yet completely inappropriate) questions. That's where this book comes in. Not every company brings in someone like Dr. Fowlkes to answer questions. That is why he am writing this book to give readers access to the most common questions he is asked when facilitating training and workshops on the transgender community.
