Erasure poetry by K. Bouquet.
Sometime in 2008 I found a book on my Catholic parents' bookshelf titled "Can Homosexuality Be Healed?". I took it, read it and was horrified. It was written in such a way that enabled Christian readers to be homophobic while maintaining that they love and care for gay people. I brought it back to melbourne with me, intending to burn it, but instead it sat on my bookshelf for years.
In 2012 I noticed it sitting there and decided I needed to do something about it. Instead of being destructive I wanted to transform it. I put white paper over the words to clear them and to reveal other messages that were hiding in the book.
I was constantly surprised by what I found in the pages. The messages uncovered reflected the feelings I was having through out the process. One would be hilarious, the next sad. One poignant, the next aggressive. Upon completetion I had a collection of short "poems" and I wanted to share them so I made a zine.
Thanks to Francis MacNutt for giving me such great material to work with, Bastian Fox Phelan for helping me make the zine and God for being an amazing root.
