This beloved film, adapted by Jonathan Harvey from his own stage play, is a charming urban coming-out tale about a gay teen, Jamie (Glen Berry), who falls for the boy next door, Ste (Scott Neal). Jamie is worried what his forthright mother (Linda Henry) will think; and also that he may make Ste's life even more complicated. This is a perennial gay favourite, and deservedly so, as it is romantic without being too sentimental, and balances that with a realistic look at the forces of conformity and repression. It's buoyed along by a superb The Mamas and the Papas/Mama Cass soundtrack and a clutch of affecting and dynamic performances. The beautiful final sequence alone is worth the price of this feel-good dvd.
