Meet Bree. She lives in a modest bungalow in Los Angeles in a condition she refers to as "stealth." In other words, though still technically male, Bree passes for a woman. You see, Bree was born Stanley, and is only a few weeks away from her long-awaited gender reassignment surgery. A spanner is thrown in the works when she receives a phone call from 20 year old Toby, a previously unknown son from a once-only long-ago heterosexual encounter. Toby is in a Manhattan police lock-up on charges ranging from street-hustling to "shoplifting a frog". Bree wants nothing to interfere with her surgery plans, but her therapist withholds her legal permission until Bree has met the son she never knew she had. Toby has no clue that she's a he, or that he's her son. On these terms, they head from New York to Los Angeles by car, Bree to have her operation and Toby to pursue stardom in the movies.
