Vintage: A Ghost Story
by Steve Berman
|
|
Butch is a Noun
by S. Bear Bergman |
|
Master of Seacliff
by Max Pierce
|
| This is an interesting meld of genres, modern gothic ghost story with a queer coming of age love story. Narrated by a nameless gay teen who is a survivor of a recent suicide attempt. The pages are filled with adolescent angst and feelings of alienation as well as the protagonists need to find someone to love. Things take a lustful and chilling turn when he becomes involved with a seductive ghost. |
In a very accessible style, Bergman explains for all of the butches, femmes, straights, and gays alike out there what life as a butch is really like. But this memoir goes beyond the practice of trying to define one type of person. Bergman shows us all how gender identity is specific to each person, and that in order to truly understand a "category" of people, you first have to realize that categories are not always helpful.
– Books to Watch out for
|
A masterful use of gothic romance novel elements mixed with a modern gay twist makes for some thrilling reading. Our protagonist, an innocent tutor, is thrust into life at Seacliff, an isolated old mansion perched above the sea, which is surrounded by dark mystery and terrible secrets. Made more intimidating by the brooding handsome master Duncan Stewart. |

Launch of Dorothy Porter's new verse novel |

El Dorado
by Dorothy Porter
Of her latest work, Porter says: “There have been
plenty of memorable serial killers in poetry, including Macbeth, Medea and Sweeney
Todd. I’ve made mine a child serial killer – not the usual violently perverted pedophile,
but a gentle and caring killer. My killer cherishes childhood innocence and does not
defile the victims. I also wanted to write about friendship. In the shallow, hollow modern
world, friendships have become the most enduring and stable relationships many of us
have. We are philosophical about the transience of romance, even marriage, but
devastated if we lose our friends.
“At the heart of El Dorado is an unusual friendship between a man and a woman, who
have known and loved each other since hildhood. Bill is a homicide detective while
Cath works in Hollywood. I wanted to play out and test this old friendship against the
backdrop of a gruelling murder investigation. El Dorado, as the title suggests, is finally
about fantasy worlds, ones that enmesh adults as well as children.

You are invited to the launch of El Dorado
Hares & Hyenas, Fitzroy, is pleased to announce the Melbourne launch of Dorothy Porter’s latest verse novel, El Dorado. An unflinching and morally uncompromising story of a serial child killer stalking the streets of Melbourne, Porter’s
latest addition to the Australian literary canon has been described as her finest work to
date. Dorothy Porter, ever a maverick, characteristically turns the story on its head,
painting a portrait of her killer as a cherisher of children, gently extinguishing his victims’
lives and placing a gold mark on their heads, entombing them forever in childhood. El Dorado will be launched at Hares &
Hyenas by well known comedian and raconteur, Sue Ann Post.

Far From Xanadu

Hook-Up Artist
by Tucker Shaw
|
| We see the return of best friends Russel and Min, from the Geography Club series, as the teens sign up as extras on a zombie movie. This novel is presented in a unique way, the book is split in half but contains the same story told twice. Once from Russel's point of view and again from Min's. An interesting concept that works well as we get to know more about these intelligent characters |
Told from protagonist Scott Latimer's perspective, an 18 year old who plays baseball in the hot corner (third base) where you have to be ready for anything. Scott's life is turned upside down when his best friend Travis comes out to him in the lead up to his biggest game ever. Analogies between life and the hot corner are cleverly thrown about in this emotional coming of age journey. |
The main character in Xanadu is Mike; she's a softball star and an expert plumber, who's keeping her recently dead father's plumbing business going - and she falls in love with a straight girl, who teases her, leads her on, and breaks her heart. But Mike comes through the experience stronger and wiser, not only about love but about other issues in her life as well. – Nancy Gardner |
Lucas, a gay teen, decides to play matchmaker for his best friend, Cate. Cate has just been dumped by her boyfriend and is miserable. Lucas matches her up with the new guy in school. Cate is skeptical of this match and not sure how she feels about the whole thing. But when someone else starts having feelings for Derek, things get very interesting. |
